CH MILNHOLM CARNIVAL QUEEN DWDFS HTMS CD "Shandy"
Sire: Ch Rodwell True Brew (Imp NZ) x Dam: Ch Milnholm Branwen
Whelped: 7/1/2007
Shandy came to live with us in 2009 at 18 months old, having been bred by Betty Milne and raised and shown to her
conformation title by the Holtkamps. I was looking for a young adult ex show dog who had potential to do dog sports, and
took to Shandy immediately. Despite not even sitting reliably on cue, she took to training with me easily and we zoomed
through the basic classes at dog club, and we’ve successfully competed in obedience and she’s earned her CCD and first
two legs in CD. We’ve dabbled a little in agility and flyball (though Shandy doesn’t approve of all the barking dogs) and
just over a year ago, Dances with Dogs (DWD) started up in Canberra and I thought we’d give that a go too. DWD is
essentially heelwork and tricks, set to music, and you can tell that the dogs enjoy it by the fact that their tails wag all
the time, even during competitions!

After a weak start at our first competition, we did at least acclimatise to the competition structure and venue, and at
our second competition, Shandy earned her first title, Dances With Dogs Freestyle Starters (DWDFS) in two straight
routines, dancing to Juice Newton’s Queen of Hearts and got her first leg in her Heelwork to Music starters (HTMS)
Title, to a song called Simarik by Turkish pop star Tarkan. We’ve just finished her HTMS title last weekend, on a very
hot day, and debuted her new Freestyle Novice level routine.

We have so much fun in DWD, and I love watching Shandy enjoy herself as well. One of the great things about DWD is
that nothing is compulsory – if a move doesn’t suit you, or your dog, then you can just leave it out of your repertoire!
For example, one position a lot of competitors use, is the dog bowing, a move that just isn’t really visible on our dwarf
legged dogs, so we just don’t bother with it. However it’s a lot easier for me to leg weaves, or the ‘pony’ (dog walking
between your legs) than those moves are for people with taller dogs. I’ve also been experimenting with moves where
Shandy puts her front paws up on the front of my legs, to show off her lovely long body.

You can see some of her routines on Youtube at;

I am very pleased to announce that on 26 November at Cooma Obedience Trial Shandy gained her final pass for her CD
title and will now be known as CH Milnholm Carnival Queen DWDFS HTMS CD. Our judge was Terry Griffin and it is all
the more pleasing at this is 3 titles in 3 months and 2 in 2 weeks for Shandy. She is brilliant and we are looking forward
to more fun and hard work next year.
